Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry

If it takes two or three cycles to dry a load, the cause is almost always airflow — and it is a safety issue too.

Long dry times are one of the most common dryer complaints in Northern Virginia, where townhomes and older colonials often have long, twisting vent runs. Nine times out of ten the dryer is fine — the airflow is restricted.

Why your dryer takes so long

  • Lint-clogged or crushed vent line — the number-one cause; restricted airflow traps moisture so clothes dry slowly.
  • Blocked exterior vent flap — lint or a bird nest keeps the flap from opening.
  • Failing heating element or thermostat — produces weak heat, extending dry time.
  • Overloading — too large a load cannot tumble and dry efficiently.

What you can safely check first

  • Clean the lint screen before every load, and confirm the exterior vent flap opens when the dryer runs.
  • Try a smaller load to rule out overloading.
  • If the vent run is long or hasn't been cleaned in over a year, it likely needs professional clearing.

When to call a technician

A restricted vent is both the top cause of slow drying and a leading cause of dryer fires, so it is worth resolving properly. Our dryer repair technicians clear the airflow path and test the heating circuit so loads dry in one cycle again.

Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry — FAQs

Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry?

Almost always a restricted vent. Lint builds up in the vent line and traps moisture, so clothes dry slowly. Clearing the vent usually restores single-cycle drying.

Is a slow dryer a fire risk?

It can be. The same lint-clogged vent that slows drying also traps heat, which is a leading cause of dryer fires — another reason to clear it promptly.
