Refrigerator Leaking Water

Water on the floor or pooling inside the fridge usually traces to one of a few simple causes.

A leaking refrigerator is rarely a serious failure, but it should be fixed before it damages your flooring. Where the water shows up tells us a lot about the cause.

Why your refrigerator is leaking

  • Frozen or clogged defrost drain — the most common cause; melt water backs up and spills inside, often pooling under the crisper drawers.
  • Cracked or disconnected water line — the supply line to the ice maker or dispenser can split or work loose, leaking behind or under the unit.
  • Failed or overfilling water inlet valve — leaks near the back-bottom of the fridge.
  • Clogged or misseated water filter — a poorly fitted filter housing can weep water.

What you can safely check first

  • Check that the water filter is seated correctly and not overdue for replacement.
  • Look under and behind the unit for an obviously wet or loose supply line.
  • If water pools inside under the drawers, the defrost drain is likely frozen — a technician can clear it.

Refrigerator Leaking Water — FAQs

Why is water pooling inside my fridge under the drawers?

That is the classic frozen-defrost-drain symptom: melt water cannot drain away, so it backs up and collects under the crisper drawers. Clearing the drain resolves it.

Is a leaking refrigerator dangerous?

It is mostly a risk to your flooring and can create a slip hazard, but a persistent leak can also point to an inlet-valve fault worth fixing before it worsens.
