Appliance Troubleshooting

Ice Maker Not Working

An ice maker that has stopped is usually an isolated, single-visit repair — not a reason to replace the fridge.

Ice-maker faults are one of the most common refrigerator calls we get, and they are almost always contained to the ice-making system itself, so the rest of the fridge keeps working fine.

Why your ice maker stopped

  • Frozen fill tube — the small tube that delivers water freezes shut, so no water reaches the mold.
  • Failed water inlet valve — the valve that feeds the ice maker stops opening.
  • Faulty ice-maker module or optical sensor — the assembly that cycles and ejects the ice fails.
  • Clogged water filter or kinked supply line — restricts the water the ice maker needs.

What you can safely check first

  • Make sure the ice maker's on/off arm or switch is in the ON position.
  • Replace the water filter if it is overdue — a clogged filter starves the ice maker.
  • Confirm the freezer is cold enough (around 0°F); a warm freezer will not make ice.

When to call a technician

If the basics check out, the fault is usually the module, inlet valve or a frozen fill tube — all quick fixes for a technician with the right genuine part. Our refrigerator repair team resolves most ice-maker problems in a single visit.

Ice Maker Not Working — FAQs

Is a broken ice maker worth repairing?

Almost always. It is typically an isolated module, inlet valve or frozen fill tube — an inexpensive, single-visit repair rather than a reason to replace the refrigerator.

Why did my ice maker stop after I changed the filter?

A filter that is not fully seated, or the wrong filter, can restrict water flow to the ice maker. Re-seat it or fit the correct genuine filter and give it 24 hours.
